Green spaces across the world and their future

    Green space futures

Across the globe, green spaces are essential to the fabric of local communities, and some have even become icons in their own right, with people traveling far and wide to visit. From major green spaces such as NYC’s Central Park to local parks and gardens, it’s been proven that spending time in nature helps to increase our happiness, energy levels, and creativity.

The world is an ever-changing place though, with green spaces being destroyed due to a variety of factors. According to the U.S. Forest Service, an estimated 6,000 acres of open space are converted to other uses each day, with expanding urban and suburban areas being the main cause of the loss of forests, grasslands, and other natural areas deemed as green spaces. Globally, green spaces have become essential to communities and ecosystems as we face the ever-imminent threat of global warming.

There are cities across the globe making protecting and creating green spaces a priority as they look toward a sustainable future. We even have the opportunity to get a glimpse into what the future of our world’s green spaces might look like with the help of advanced technologies. We utilized our AI image generator to determine what popular green spaces might look like in the future.

    Methodology

To get our seed list of green space attractions in the top 100 most populated cities, we scraped TripAdvisor for attractions in the "Nature & Parks" section, tagged as either "Parks", "Gardens", or "National Parks". From this list, we eliminated any attractions with less than 10 reviews to remove any unreliable listings. For the remaining attractions, we then collected the number of Google reviews and average Google reviews rating for 2,300 green space attractions.

Additionally, we used Google Keyword Planner to collect the number of monthly searches for each attraction, both globally, and for each individual state. To account for differences in local search intent for certain parks, we added the location to the keyword to find the most searched for attraction from each State, e.g. "hyde park london" rather than just "hyde park". This helps to eliminate any searches intended to be for a Hyde Park, etc, based in that state.

Finally, we utilized our AI image generator to determine what the U.S. and global cities with the most green spaces might look like 50 years from now based on the rate of tree loss within each city, or the county or region the city is located in. Data accurate as of November 15, 2024.
